If you don’t already know what a chakra is, please take a moment to read our previous post entitled Chakras for Beginners

Root Chakra Muladhara

This post will go into more detail regarding the first chakra known as the Root Chakra, also known by the name Muladhara. It is portrayed with the color Red and the symbol you see above.

This chakra is associated with your earth connection.

It relies on survival instincts and the basic needs that we need as our foundation to live, grow and evolve. It represents the conscious awakening from animal to human. This is our root chakra, the same as a tree sits on its roots. When you sit cross legged on the ground this chakra connects with the earth.

Red represents energy, awakening, strength and transformation. Smell is the main sense of this chakra.

The four petaled flower represents the four main pillars of evolution within the root chakra: mind, intellect, consciousness and ego.

This Chakra is associated with your adrenal cortex. As well as the skeletal system, teeth, large intestines and blood. The herbs/scents associated with the root chakra are sage and cedar.

When this chakra is out of balance you may experience mental symptoms such as; nightmares, anxiety, loss of motivation, obsession about money, fear, instability, and sometimes panic or paranoia. As well as physical symptoms such as; weight gain in “love handles”, joint pain, eating problems, bladder or constipation issues, and  lower back or leg problems. If you are experiencing any of these at a level you feel you can not handle seek medical advise immediately as these could also be signs of a more serious issue.

However, if a medical professional says there is nothing wrong with you and you have not yet checked your chakras there are some affirmations and exercises that you can do to help heal and balance. Using jewelry and colors in clothing can dramatically help you as well.
